Ron Smith heads to Uganda

Ron kicks off his journey to Uganda departing Jan 21 and will return Jan 30. He is looking for hospital sites remote from Kampala that we can work with in our Maternal & Child Healthcare Education and Delivery in Uganda. This is a 3 year program to increase the capacity and quality of Maternal & Child Health care in Uganda by improving related health care education and infrastructure.
A central component of the initiative is a Vocational Training Team (VTT) exchange centered on an exchange of OB/GYN health care professionals from Makerere University in Kampala and Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA USA. The first main component will be a two way exchange of doctors and nurses involved in education of maternal and child health care professionals engages in prenatal, delivery and post natal care. Teams from each university will exchange each year for the three years to develop a strong connection between institutions and faculty. The second component will be the integration of distance learning programs between the partner universities. The third component will build out the distance education program within Uganda in order to extend Maternal & Child health care education to a larger part of Uganda and use it as a model in other remote parts of Africa. In parallel to the education components, direct humanitarian aid will be delivered to selected sites in Uganda (remote from Kampala) where Maternal & Child Health care units need to be improved with water, sanitation and supplies as well as a transportation vehicle to transport doctors, nurses and midwives to more remote villages.
