This past Saturday April 13th, Rotary District 7430 sponsored the 4 Way Test Speech Contest for high school students in each of its three regions. This is the third year that District 7430 held the competition and the SouthEast Regional Contest was held at Central Bucks South High School.

From the earliest days of Rotary, Rotarians have promoted high ethical standards in both their professional and personal lives. Regardless of the situation we find ourselves, consider of the things we think, say and do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?

2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?

3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

4. Will it be BENFICIAL to all concerned?

Prior to today’s contest ,four local Rotary Clubs approached a local high school to partnership with in teaching the students about the ideals of Rotary and to present this opportunity to compete in a speech contest. The participating Rotary Clubs were: Willow Grove, Blue Bell, Warminster and Warrington. The students ranged from 11

th to 12th grades and included: Shane Heron (Upper Moreland High School), Brendan Hopkins (Wissahickon High School), Adam Adnane (William Tennent High School) and Bobby Mallon (Central Bucks South High School).

The topic of the speeches were all interesting and thought provoking and ranged from our current healthcare system to the seeking of fame and money to the impact of polarization in congress and gun control legislation. In a 5-7 minute speech, each student used the 4 Way Test to challenge the audience to consider a truthful life that deals fairly with people in relationships that benefit everyone.

Three Rotarians, Marti Green (Horsham), Philip Janke (Harleysville) and Andy Thompson (Morrisville), served as judges and had the challenging task of scoring the speeches on their content, organization and delivery.Rotarian Patricia Martin (Horsham) served as timekeeper to record the time each speech took. Rotarian David Woffindin (Doylestown) served as Teller, tabulating the Judge’s scores to arrive at a winner. The top three students were awarded with a cash prize and certificate. Brendan Hopkins placed first in the contest, with Adam Adnane in second and Shane Heron in third place. Brendan will now move on to the District Finals to compete against the other two Regional Contest winners. The District Finals will be held at Rotary District 7430’s District Conference taking place on Saturday April 27th at the Skytop Resort in Skytop, PA. Good Luck Brendan!
